U.S. Loses Trade Ruling

dummidumbwit wrote an interesting post today on
Here’s a quick excerpt
Free markets are one of those things often preached and selectively practiced. Al Jazeera:
A World Trade Organisation (WTO) appeal panel upheld on Monday a ruling from December that found that the US had breached trade rules over its subsidies to cotton farmers.
The ruling means that Brazil could now seek one billon dollars in sanctions until the US stops payments to its farmers.
Developing nations, especially in Africa, say the US subsidies lower global prices, squeezing their own poor farmers out of the market.

The US government is estimated to have paid its cotton farmers $2bn to $4bn in subsidies in most recent years.
However, Tony Avirgan from the Economic Policy Institute, a non-profit think-tank, told Al Jazeera that the US government is unlikely to comply with the WTO ruling and has shown no inclination it will do so.

sinking city

disciplepete wrote an interesting post today on
Here’s a quick excerpt
I used to associate direct use of groundwater with the rural areas and farms.  Wells, I thought, were a thing of the past.

In Jakarta, however, it is the factories, the hotels and the wealthy residents who draw water from wells.

The existing water utility companies are not coping with the demand from the city’s 14 million dwellers.  So, those with deep pockets dig even deeper wells to supplement their water needs.

This picture from wikipedia illustrates groundwater.

The lowering level of groundwater, coupled with the piling developments on the surface, causes the city to sink.  If the estimates are correct, Jakarta will be underwater by 2025.

It doesn’t help that Jakarta is a coastal city.  The rising sea level from climate change will only aggravate the matter.

Just yesterday, parts of the city were inundated by a tidal wave brought about by astronomical interactions.

Obama loves Israel (or so he says); Fatah/Hamas jealous!

Speaking before AIPAC, Obama says he is a strong supporter of Israel and believes that an undivided Jerusalem must remain the capital of Israel.
He said this to great applause. I wonder if anyone fainted.
“Words…just words?”
Well, yes. They are just words, aren’t they. And Obama’s got a lot more where those came from.
Obama’s statement about Jerusalem is ground-breaking since the “international community” doesn’t recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. The bone of contention here (and it’s a big bone) is that the Palestinians plan for Jerusalem (East Jerusalem) to be the capital of the Palestinian state when and if it is ever born.
My guess is that Obama has been advised of the touchstone nature of declaring an undivided Jerusalem the capital of Israel. Of course, we won’t know if this giant pander will win Obama any Jewish support until the General Election, but I would […]

Fears of being seen as insensitive to the issues on which they are meeting, leaders attending the UN Food and Agricultural meeting in Rome tone down their menu from the previous meeting.
The Times of London has procured a copy of this year’s bill of fare:

“It does not look good if leaders discussing global starvation are seen to be dining lavishly,” an FAO official said. “At the last summit in 2002 we did not give enough thought to the menu and were open - unfairly, in our view - to the charge of hypocrisy.”

Although not […]

Outcry after French court rules on virginity
June 4, 2008 - AP
ELAINE GANLEY
PARIS (AP) - The bride said she was a virgin. When her new husband discovered
that was a lie, he went to court to annul the marriage—and a French judge agreed
The ruling ending the Muslim couple’s union has stunned France and raised concerns the country’s much-cherished secular values are losing ground to religious traditions from its fast-growing immigrant communities.
The decision also exposed the silent shame borne by some Muslim women who transgress long-held religious dictates demanding proof of virginity on the wedding night.
In its ruling, the court concluded the woman had misrepresented herself as a virgin and that, in this particular marriage, virginity was a prerequisite.
But in treating the case as a breach of contract, the ruling was decried by critics who said it undermined decades of progress in women’s rights. Marriage, they said, was reduced to the status […]

Should Obama Take Clinton As VP

Now with the nomination clinched Sen. Obama needs to find the best canidate for vice president that he can find.  Many feel that this is Senator Clinton while some politicians feel that Obama needs to say no to that option.  The Democratic party needs to unify and this could be the easiest solution for that.  Read more about this issue from CNN: http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/06/04/obama.vp/index.html

Here’s a quick excerpt
The U.S. military announced Tuesday the arrest of two al-Qaida in Iraq bombing suspects and a Shiite militia leader in separate operations north and south of Baghdad.
One of the al-Qaida suspects arrested along with four aides is believed to oversee security for al-Qaida’s Iraq branch in Mosul as well as facilitating bombings targeting Iraqi police in the area, the military said in a statement.
Mosul is one of the terror network’s last urban strongholds where U.S. and Iraqi forces have waged fierce battles against militants in recent months.
Separatelty, another al-Qaida in Iraq suspect was captured along with his associate in Tikrit, a Sunni Muslim city north of the capital. He allegedly masterminded suicide bombings and “foreign terrorist movement” for al-Qaida, the statement said.
