innovation in sports?

All the hype about Speedo’s LZR Racer swim suit makes one wonder where the sport is heading.

38 swimmers wearing the suit have set new records since its introduction in February.  Just yesterday, Kosuke Kitajima clocked 2min 7.51sec at the Japan Open to break the world record for men’s 200m breaststroke.

You see, the Speedo design is stealing the thunder from the athletes.

Yet, some athletes actually swear by it.  Singapore’s 18-year-old Tao Li, who set a new record for 200m butterfly at the National Championships yesterday, said “I feel more confident when I swim in the suit, but the most important factor is still training hard.”

The unfortunate trend is that the sport is now as much about product superiority as it is about sportsmanship.

To level the playing field again, sports councils ought to take a leaf from beauty pageants –  they make contestants parade in gowns of similar design.

But then […]

My Relationship: Do I Stay Or Leave? By Dr. Arlene Krieger, PhD Sexologist

Here’s a quick excerpt
Again, one of the No. 1 questions that patients want to know in Sex therapy sessions. Of all of the issues of love, lust, libido, relationship, sex and intimacy in relationship…most everyone at one time or another asks this question.
My response is, that with faith, love and hope, anything worth fighting for can be fixed!
I always ask my patients to think back to what it was that attracted them to each other to begin with. In other words, what little nuances like, the way the other person smiled, or was easy to be with…or perhaps was kind to animals and strangers, or always offering to help out those in need.
These types of personal and behavioral characteristics are what makes up the charm or charisma that you were most likely first drawn to upon the first encounters with your partner.
Once into the grit and grind of daily life however, it is […]

Before There Was Adam Bender, Before There Was Jim Abbott, There Was Pete Gray

by Treadmarkz
It appears to me that my readership is interested in the story of Adam Bender, the one-legged Little League catcher from Kentucky. Most of you will probably remember Jim Abbott, the pitcher for the California Angels in the late-80s and early-90s. But how many of you have heard of Pete Gray?
Jim Abbott was missing the business end of his one arm, but Pete Gray was missing an entire arm. He played in the outfield for the St. Louis Browns (now the Baltimore Orioles) for just one season, 1945. Nothing magical, in fact he only batted .218, well lower than an “average” hitter. But plenty of lower-than-average batters come and go every season in the major leagues. Having one arm had little to do with it. As you will see from any photo of Gray at bat, having one arm left him able to swing more freely than he would […]

Fresh Clashes Kill 29 In Sri Lanka

Here’s a quick excerpt
Colombo, Sri Lanka (AHN) - At least 28 Tamil Tiger rebels and one security personnel were killed in fresh clashes in the country’s restive northern region, the military said on Sunday.
On Saturday, the fighting in the Mannar, Vavuniya, Weli Oya and Jaffna areas saw one soldier killed, the defense ministry said, adding that 25 rebels and 34 soldiers were injured.
On the other hand, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), said that they had killed four soldiers in the Vavuniya area alone. But they did not report on their own losses.
It was not possible to independently verify the military’s claims because media are banned from the northern jungles where much of the fighting takes place.

U-S first lady Laura Bush has appealed to the international community not to abandon Afghanistan in the face of resurgent Taliban violence.
She made the called during an unanncounced visit to Afghanistan.
Kabul is set to ask international donors in Paris this week to fund a 50-billion US dollar five-year development plan it hopes will undercut the insurgency.
Mrs Bush says she is in Afghanistan to shore up the international commitment as Afghan, American and NATO forces struggle to contain Taliban guerrilla attacks and suicide bombs.
In the last two years, Taliban rebels have killed some 12-thousand people.

Sri Lankan war heroes will be remembered as fighters against international terrorism – Mahinda Rajapakse

pbtt wrote an interesting post today on
Here’s a quick excerpt
The Sri Lankan war heroes who are fighting to safeguard a parliamentary democracy from Fascist agents of terror will be also remembered as heroes fighting to put a stop to international terrorism said President Mahinda Rajapaksa of Sri Lanka.
Celebrating the national War Heroes Day near the parliamentary complex in the historic Jayawardhanapura near Colombo, June 7, the President said, “The importance of having this memorial near the legislature is understood when one realizes the service of our War Heroes to safeguard justice and fair play in a country that was about to be subjugated by terrorism and the law of the jungle, in place of democracy. Now, the representatives of the people will also have the opportunity to pay their respects to the heroes who are protecting democracy before they enter the shrine of democracy.”

Al-Qaeda exploits anger in Algeria’s Kabylie

pbtt wrote an interesting post today on
Here’s a quick excerpt
The mountains of northern Algeria have long sheltered outlaws, but it’s not just rugged terrain that draws Al-Qaeda to ravines and forests.
The local Berber people’s alienation from the Arab-dominated government of the OPEC member makes the steep slopes of Kabylie a congenial base for the toughest rebel force in north Africa.
That reality means blind eyes are sometimes turned to the guerrilla outsiders’ presence by a population that shares little of their religious fundamentalist ideology.
Diplomats say the resulting denial of intelligence to the state poses a transnational security threat that extends from Kabylie, just 90 minutes’ drive east from Algiers, across the Maghreb and north to Europe’s Mediterranean shores.
