Peace-loving Muslims
Walter Williams, JWR
All of us should give some serious thought to some of the ideas contained in an article circulating the blogsphere titled “Why a Peaceful Majority is Irrelevant.” So often our political leaders, “experts” and talking heads tell us that Islam is a peaceful religion and most Muslims are not out to destroy the West. We’re told it’s only that 1 percent, out of 1.2 billion Muslims, who are fanatical jihadists who believe America is the Great Satan, cause of all evil, and should be attacked and destroyed. In terms of national policy, it’s irrelevant whether Islam is a peaceful religion and most Muslims are peaceful.
Think back to the 1930s when the Japanese murdered an estimated 3 million to 10 million people in China, Indonesia, Korea, Philippines and Indochina; and on December 7, 1941 when they attacked Pearl Harbor, killing over 2,400 Americans. I’m betting that […]

Lt. Gen. Ann E. Dunwoody was nominated by George W. Bush recently and is the first woman to receive the honor. She will soon face the Senate’s vote.
Israel’s High Court denied an appeal by the family of Cpl. Gilad Shalit. They refused to include Shalit’s release in their cease fire with Hamas. I think that this whole thing is just a big nobody wants to be the one who made the mistake situation, so they just decide to brush it off.

Europe’s Roma

Bottom of the Heap
Economist.com
THE village of Vizuresti lies 35km (22 miles) from Bucharest and on the wrong side of the tracks. For the first few miles the road from the highway is paved, passing through a prosperous district with solid houses and well-tended fields. But once it crosses the railway, leading only to the Roma settlement, the tarmac stops. The way to Vizuresti is 20 minutes of deep potholes and ruts. Life for its 2,500 people, four-fifths of them Roma, is just as tough.
Mihai Sanda and his family, 37 of them, live in half-a-dozen self-built, mud-floored huts. In his two-room dwelling, seven people share one bedroom; chickens cluck in the other room. The dirt and smell, the lack of mains water, electricity, sewerage and telephone are all redolent of the poorest countries in the world. So is the illiteracy. Ionela Calin, a 34-year-old member of Mr Sanda’s extended family, married […]

Price of Matches Going Up?

Stock up on matches like it’s WWIII because the cost of them might be going up. Apparantley a ton of match factories in India are going on strike. Why are matches made in India anyway? Are we afraid of a chemical warfare attack from China or something? I’m digging further into this whole thing. I contacted a few factories and I’ll post an article update.
India blames China for their woes because China increased their export taxes on phosphorus 135% last month.

Colombian rebels release video of abducted congressman

Here’s a quick excerpt
Colombia’s main rebel group, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, has released a video of an abducted congressman as proof the politician is alive.
The video, broadcast Saturday on Colombian TV Caracol, showed Sigifredo Lopez, who was kidnapped in 2002 with 11 other politicians in the city of Santiago de Cali.
In the footage, Lopez cites the date as May 30, 2008, and confirms that other members of his party died in captivity on June 18, 2007.
Lopez asked the government of President Alvaro Uribe, who has been intransigent in negotiating with the guerrillas, to reach a deal quickly with the rebels and exchange prisoners for Colombian hostages in a safe haven.
The Colombian government did not issue a response to the video.
Established as the military wing of the Colombian Communist Party in 1964, FARC is Colombia’s oldest, largest and best-equipped Marxist rebel group, according to the U.S. Department of […]

Russia to cut army to one million

Here’s a quick excerpt
MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia said on Monday it would cut its army by over 10 percent by 2013, accelerating a drive to create a more effective, mobile force with a slimmed down officer corps.
Defence Minister Anatoly Serdyukov, clearly sensitive to any discontent within the forces’ leadership, tempered his announcement with promises of bonuses for officers and steps to ease the pain of those leaving.
However, a military analyst said the plans were not as radical as they might seem, the numbers cited by Serdyukov constituting a “laughable” understatement of the size of the armed forces. Secrecy surrounded the size of the army as well as other military such as the border guard and interior troops.
Vladimir Putin, who stepped down as president in May, saw a rebuilding of the military as central to restoration of central power in Russia and revival of an international image tarnished by post-Soviet decline.

Here’s a quick excerpt
A member of an Iraqi city council shot at U.S. forces Monday outside Baghdad, killing at least three soldiers, two Iraqi Interior Ministry officials said.
But the U.S. military said one coalition soldier and an “enemy” were killed and five others were wounded. The military said it is investigating.
The Iraqi official fired an AK-47 at U.S. troops after they entered the City Council building in al-Madaen, about 25 miles (40 kilometers) southeast of Baghdad, according to one Interior Ministry official. The councilman killed at least three people and wounded four, a ministry official said.
U.S. forces returned fire, killing the councilman, according to two Interior Ministry officials.
The shooting happened after U.S. soldiers and local officials had attended a ceremony to open a park in al-Madaen, also known as Salman Pak, an Interior Ministry official said.
In other violence, a mortar attack killed at least 10 people Sunday evening in northern Iraq, […]
