Zimbabwe Faces Wider Sanctions Under Bush Plan

Here’s a quick excerpt
JOHANNESBURG — President Bush announced Saturday that the United States was moving to broaden its sanctions against Zimbabwe, for the first time aiming at the government itself as well as a lengthening list of members of its governing elite, because of what he described as “a sham election.”
The president said in a statement released by the White House that he was instructing the State and Treasury departments to develop sanctions against what he called “this illegitimate government of Zimbabwe and those who support it.”
The United States will also be pushing at the united Nationsfor an arms embargo against Zimbabwe and a ban on travel by officials of its government. These proposals are virtually certain to run into opposition from South Africa and other governments, but the American sanctions against the government can be carried out unilaterally.
The presidential runoff that was conducted Friday in Zimbabwe has been widely […]

Here’s a quick excerpt
Police in Basilan have confirmed the release of one of five linemen of the Basilan Electric Coop. (Baselco) who were abducted by members of the Abu Sayyaf in Tuburan town on Thursday.
Ronnie Tansiung was freed Thursday night by the kidnappers allegedly led by Puruji Indama, Nurhassan Jamiri, Muhmin Mutahail and a certain Manang.
Alfred Oyao, Baselco manager, said the Abu Sayyaf is demanding a substantial ransom for the release of the remaining hostages, two sets of brothers — Birin and Paul Herwig, and Alberto and Emilberto Singson.
“But we are not going to heed the demand,” Oyao said, adding that Malacañang also told them not to pay ransom.
He said there is no way for the victims’ families to produce the ransom.

Philippine TV Denies Anew It Paid Ransom To Abu Sayyaf

Inasmuch as we would like the truth to come out, it is our duty to correct erroneous reports that have been repeatedly published in major newspapers.
The reports allude to the involvement of ABS-CBN in the payment of ransom, citing a supposed Meralco-registered plane that was seen in Zamboanga City Airport in June to deliver two duffel bags that allegedly contained ransom.
We have checked this with Meralco and it said it has no Cessna plane and that no Meralco aircraft ever flew to Zamboanga during the entire kidnapping ordeal.
Meralco’s majority shareholder is the Lopez Group of Companies, which owns ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation.ABS-CBN strictly abides by its “no ransom” policy as it would put more journalists at risk from threats of kidnapping.

Iraqi Qaeda group claims Anbar attack

Here’s a quick excerpt
DUBAI (Reuters) - An Iraqi al Qaeda-linked group claimed responsibility on Saturday for a suicide attack in Anbar province earlier this week.
The self-styled Islamic State in Iraq, started by al Qaeda and fellow Sunni militant groups, said in a statement it was behind Thursday’s attack by a bomber wearing an explosive belt that killed more than 25 people and wounded many others.
Iraqi police put the death toll at 20 people and the U.S. military said three U.S. Marines and two interpreters had been killed. The bomber struck a tribal council meeting in the town of Garma, 30 km (20 miles) northwest of Baghdad.
“(They) have sided with the Crusaders … and they violated the honor of Muslims and stole their money in the name of fighting terrorism,” the Iraqi group said in a posting on a website that carries messages by militant groups.

US delays handover to Iraq government in Anbar Province

Here’s a quick excerpt
BAGHDAD - The US military yesterday postponed a weekend ceremony to hand over responsibility for security in Anbar Province to the Iraqi government, citing forecasts of bad weather.
Lieutenant Colonel Chris Hughes, a military spokesman, said the decision was not connected to a suicide bombing at a community meeting in the Anbar town of Karmah on Thursday that killed more than 20 people, including three US Marines and two interpreters.
High winds and dust storms are expected today. Hughes said the conditions would prevent US and Iraqi officials from flying to the event.
The military provided no new date for the official hand over, but said it would take place soon.
Anbar, the vast province west of Baghdad that stretches to the borders of Syria, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia, was long the center of the Sunni Arab-driven insurgency against US forces and their Iraqi allies. But the number of attacks has plummeted since local […]

Al-Qaeda helpers operating in Bosnia

Here’s a quick excerpt
BANJA LUKA — Bosnian Deputy Anti-Terrorism Security Minister Vjekoslav Vukovi? says there probably are organizations operating in the country linked to Al-Qaeda.
“We have obtained certain information and indicators that some of these organizations are active in Bosnia-Herzegovina, but under different names. Individuals who worked in outlawed organizations are now running others, which suggests that they are still active in Bosnia-Herzegovina,” Vukovi? told Banja Luka daily Nezavisne Novine.
He said that security and police agencies in Bosnia-Herzegovina had information about organizations and individuals listed by the UN as accomplices to terrorism, and certain measures were being taken accordingly.
The UN periodically publishes a list of organizations and individuals that are either members of or are linked to Al-Qaeda.
The list was revised a few months ago and now features groups such as Al-Furkhan, the Al-Harmain and the Al-Masjed Al-Aksa humanitarian foundations, Bosnian Ideal Future, the Global Relief Foundation, and Taibah […]

Somali Rebels Say “No thanks” to al Qaeda

pbtt wrote an interesting post today on
Here’s a quick excerpt
At least one of Somalia’s Islamist insurgent groups has rejected al Qaeda’s call to sabotage the recent (partial) peace that the UN recently helped broker in the country.
Alliance for the Re-Liberation of Somalia Deputy Chairman Abdirahman Abdishakur, who was in the Kenyan capital Nairobi, rejected the terrorist appeal.
“I do not think we are interested in al-Qaida’s statements and they have nothing to do with Somali issues. Al-Qaida has not got any base in Somalia and they always issue statements against any peace process. I do not think their statements are relevant to the Somali people,” said Abdishakur.
Abdishakur has exposed al Qaeda’ attempted interference for what it is: a transparent and ill-substantiated ploy to exacerbate tensions on the ground, impede any progress toward a cessation of hostilities, and, most likely, to induce fear in those committed to bringing peace to Somalia.
