We already know, from our experience in Viet Nam that if we put enough troops into an unstable environment, a civil war even that we can establish relative security. That environment was much more intense, and we tied up a draftee army (a much larger Army) for years to try and prop up a variety of regimes that could not exist other wise.
At times, you could drive unmolested from Saigon to Hue on their highway and rice production was better in the Mekong delta. But the cost to us was the greatest period of social upheaval since the civil war here at home (Imagine that, stay out of civil wars perhaps?).
The toll on our Armed Forces was very high also, fighting a war that was unpopular at home with an Army made up of people who were unable to get a college draft deferment (talk about elitism) still resonates today […]

The UNP has scored a major victory by managing to field Major General (Retd) Janaka Perera to contest as the chief ministerial candidate of the North Central Province. When the NCP and Sabaragamauwa PCs were dissolved, one point raised by this columnist was that the UNP’s prospects in these provinces were particularly bleak because of the lack of personalities who can provide leadership to the various districts. The examples that I took were the Kurunegala district, where the UNP has Gamini Jayawickreme Perera, Johnston Fernando and Dayasiri Jayasekera, all capable leaders. Even the Puttalam district has Palitha Range Bandara, an ex-cop who is good at providing leadership in a primitive, caveman like way. Colombo has Ravi Karunanayake, Matara now has Mangala Samaraweera. But the districts of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Ratnapura were wastelands in terms of leaders. “My involvement in the Middle East is certainly unusual,” Van Agt confessed in an interview with Haaretz at his home in Nijmegen, where he discussed Israel, the Palestinians, European foreign policy, the Holocaust and anti-Semitism.

Currently, Van Agt is writing a book about the Israeli-Arab conflict. In December he launched an info-site (www.driesvanagt.nl) about the subject, in which he accuses Israel of brutal treatment of the Palestinians, violating international law and implementing racist policies.

Real True Internet News loves finding this kind of sensational headline. As CNN reports, <A HREF=”http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/asiapcf/06/28/malaysia.anwar.ap/index.html” target=_blank>Malaysian opposition leader accused of sodomy</A>.
Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim took refuge Sunday at the Turkish Embassy after police began probing an allegation that he sodomized his male aide. (They said “PROBED”, heh heh.)
Ibrahim has a past history of this behavior as well: But it all unraveled in 1998 when he was accused of sodomizing his driver and abusing his power to cover up the deed.
The CNN article also points out that sodomy, even if consensual, is punishable by 20 years’ imprisonment in Muslim-majority Malaysia. So apparently the issue is not one of forcible rape but rather sexual preference.

Paris - Six police officers and soldiers have been killed and 14 people injured in clashes with terrorists belonging to the al- Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) group, Algerian media reported Saturday, citing security sources. The clashes took place over the Muslim weekend, or Thursday and Friday, the reports said.
In the spa resort of Aftis near Jijel, a group of 30 AQIM fighters who had been cornered by the military split into three commandos and tried to fight their way out of the area.
Four members of the security forces were killed when the first commando attacked their vehicles.
The second commando attacked a sentry, while the third attacked police officers called as reinforcements.
