Here We Go Again - Mississippi River Reopens as Flooding Wanes

unknown wrote an interesting post today on
Here’s a quick excerpt
Rueter’s News reports that “The Mississippi River, the most important U.S. commercial waterway, reopened to water navigation on Saturday after much of it was closed for nearly a month due to the worst flooding in 15 years. Water levels have been dropping, but remain above flood stage. Near St. Louis, the Mississippi River was 7.1 feet (2.2 meters) above flood stage Saturday morning, which was down from Monday when it crested at 8.3 feet above flood level. The flooding has caused billions of dollars in damages and wiped out millions of acres (hectares) of corn and soybeans and sent grain prices to new highs this summer.”
It is ironic that much of the South is drought stricken and the Midwest is cursed with too much water. I suppose one could say that the overall drought conditions contribute to flooding. But having lived in Illinois and having spent most of my life […]

Biofuels ‘causing food price rises’

Here’s a quick excerpt
Al Jazeera:
Biofuels have triggered a 75 per cent increase in world food prices, according to a leaked confidential report from the World Bank.
The report’s author, a senior economist at the bank, said that contrary to claims by the United States government, increased demand from India and China had not been the cause of rising food prices.
“Rapid income growth in developing countries has not led to large increases in global grain consumption,” the report said.
Rising food prices and the use of biofuels, which supporters claim are a greener alternative to using fossil fuel, will be discussed at a G8 summit in Japan next week.

Sri Lanka has always been confronted by Political Discord since Independence

Here’s a quick excerpt
Sri Lankans should divert their intelligence and industry to build peace than to encourage violent conflict.

By Prof. Bertram Bastiampillai
Sri Lanka has been confronted by political discord. First it was between the majority rulers, Sinhalese, and the hill country Tamils- Indian descendants, since the 1820’s. Then in 1956, Sinhalese was declared the official language of the country, ignoring Tamil speaking people, inclusive of a large number of Muslims from the North and the East and elsewhere, together with the Eurasiens, popularly known as Burghers and Malay’s, again the Tamil speaking portion of the populous. Naturally the consequences were the agitation of the Tamils, in the North and East and the Sinhalese response to this lead to anti Tamil riots.
Sri Lanka was never a nation in the true sense of the word. People did not get integrated to build a nation, but remained separate and distinctive within Sri Lanka. There never […]

Trinidad Government Maybe Poking Sleeping Giant

Ranjith Wijewardene wrote an interesting post today on
Here’s a quick excerpt
Submitted by Brubaker
An article appearing in local print media on June 16, 2008 under the headline “No tourism threat from Trinidad” which suggests Trinidad & Tobago involvement in tourism poses no immediate threat to Barbados could be the greatest understatement tourism stakeholders are being fed about the twin island destination. Furthermore, just because Barbados has apparently been in the tourism industry much longer than Trinidad & Tobago and has a greater number of hotel rooms, is no guarantee the threat will not become a reality sooner than later. Lest it be forgotten, if the Government of Trinidad & Tobago had not acquiesced to Prime Minister Barrow’s request in 1969 to allow BWIA to be designated as Barbados’ airline carrier when Barbados was experiencing difficulties with airlift, one wonders if Barbados’ tourism would have ever developed to its present level.
Trinidad & Tobago may not at this stage have a large quantum […]
