At the Sri Lanka Economic summit 2008 sessions titled “For a peaceful and stable Sri Lanka”, Ven. Bellanvila Wimalaratne Thero Chancellor, Jayawardena University and Secretary of the Congress of religions roundly criticized the involvement of the Buddhist clergy in party politics. It only warps their sense of judgment and clouds their decisions on right and wrong, he said.
UNP M.P. Ravi Karunanayake, speaking on the occasion, said the Govt. is trying to develop the East giving precedence to a para military group, a break away faction of the LTTE. The solution to the ethnic problem lies not with the LTTE or the TMVP, but with the unity of all communities, the Sinhalese, Tamils and Muslims.
He also frowned upon the local Chambers of Commerce for their lack of unity. In countries like Egypt and Bangla Desh, the Chambers play a pivotal role and make decisions for the Govt.
The Govt.’s so called unending […]

Embassy was always in Taliban crosshairs

Here’s a quick excerpt
NEW DELHI: The mastermind behind the suicide attack on the Indian embassy in Kabul on Monday may not be immediately known, but it had been the favourite target of the Taliban before they entered the war-torn city on September 26, 1996, till they were driven out by the US-led coalition in November 2001.
So intense were the rocket attacks on the embassy at a time when Taliban were inching closer to Kabul waging bloody fights against the Northern Alliance forces led by legendary leader Masood, that officials had decided to construct a heavily fortified bunker right inside the embassy premises.

Pak, Taliban want India out of Afghanistan

Here’s a quick excerpt
NEW DELHI: Why is India a persistent target for the Taliban in Afghanistan? India is one of the largest donors of reconstruction projects in Afghanistan, and has regained a substantive part of the strategic foothold it lost in the country when Pakistan-backed Taliban took over.
It is also one of the strongest supporters of the Karzai government, which has no takers in Afghanistan’s other neighbour - Pakistan. In fact, India’s influence is now spread across the spectrum in Afghanistan, which is not music to Pakistani ears.
India’s presence in Afghanistan is mainly to strengthen and stabilise the country with its varied development and reconstruction projects.

Taliban claims Kabul embassy blast

Here’s a quick excerpt
The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the deadliest suicide bombing in Afghanistan’s capital Kabul since the US-led invasion in 2001.
A Taliban suicide car bomb hit the Indian Embassy in Kabul killing 41 people and wounding 141, in an attack Afghan authorities said was co-ordinated with foreign agents in the region, a likely reference to Pakistan.
Afghanistan has accused Pakistani agents of being behind a number of attacks in recent weeks and Afghan President Hamid Karzai last month threatened to send troops across the border to attack militants there if Pakistan does not take action.
The bomber rammed his car into the embassy just as two diplomatic vehicles were entering the compound.

Here’s a quick excerpt
An MP whose lost five constituents in the London bombings spoke of his disgust following reports that a party was planned to celebrate the life of one of the bombers.
Andrew Dismore, MP for Hendon, was commenting on news that the family of Shehzad Tanweer would join 400 guests at his grave in Pakistan to mark his death on July 7 2005. Tanweer, 22, was one of four suicide bombers responsible for the deaths of 52 innocent people killed when four explosions ripped through London’s public transport network.
Mr Dismore said: “I think it’s one of the most appalling things I have ever heard of. It’s absolutely sick. What does that say to the relatives of the victims who are still suffering? And what about those who are injured too?”

Al Qaeda members in Iraq move to ‘hotter spots’

Here’s a quick excerpt
Baghdad: Some members of the Al Qaeda terror network in Iraq have started to leave the country for other hot spots in Africa, like Sudan and Somalia, security sources told Gulf News.
A key reason behind the change in strategy is the intensity of the latest military strikes launched by Iraqi and US forces against the terror network, which has been the major challenge in restoring the stability of Iraq, the sources said.
——————————————————————————–
——————————————————————————–
“Our intelligence information indicates the withdrawal of certain groups of Al Qaeda from Iraq because of the military strikes. Many of them have escaped through the borders with Syria and Iran to hotter zones such as Somalia and Sudan,” Major General Hussain Ali Kamal, head of the Investigation and Information Agency at the Interior Ministry, told Gulf News. “I believe this is the beginning of the complete withdrawal of Al Qaeda from Iraqi territory.”
