Senators Barack Obama and John McCain are proposing sharply different strategies to seize the initiative from a resurgent Taliban and Al Qaeda in Afghanistan, positions that underscore the two leading U.S. presidential candidates’ competing visions of how to combat terrorism.
In recent weeks, the violence in Afghanistan has eclipsed the war in Iraq, with record numbers of U.S. casualties and a daring prison break that freed hundreds of captured insurgents. At the same time, assessments from top U.S. military leaders have concluded that the Taliban and Al Qaeda are as strong as they have been since the United States invaded Afghanistan after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
That has returned Afghanistan to the center of the U.S. presidential campaign. Obama, the presumptive Democratic nominee, and McCain, his Republican counterpart, both recently outlined their visions for solving the crisis.

Three (03) Tamil families, consisting 12 members and one individual, sought the protection of the Navy at the Pallimunai Fishing Marshalling Point in Mannar on the 05th July 2008 around 0730 hrs.
They consisted of four (04) males (aged 25, 29, 33 and 46), three (03) females (aged 23, 34 and 35) and six (06) children (aged 02, 04, 04, 05, 07, and 08). The group had arrived in a locally made craft (wallam) fitted with 08 Horse Power OBM departing from Illuppukadaweli via Viddataltivu.
During the preliminary investigations, they had revealed that they fled their areas of residence due to the lack of basic needs and the prevailing insecurity as a result of LTTE’s atrocities including forced conscription, harassment and abduction.

Apart from Amitabh and Aamir, siblings Saif Ali Khan and Soha Ali Khan too have committed their support to a signature campaign on “Harmony vs Terrorism” that was launched here Monday under the aegis of the Citizen’s Council for a Better Tomorrow (CCBT).
The five-kilometre human chain on India’s Independence Day will start from the city’s central business district of Nariman Point and go on to Chowpatty Beach in south Mumbai.

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iranian forces have killed a suspected Kurdish insurgent and captured another in a clash in the country’s northwest, media reported on Monday.
Iran’s Press TV quoted witnesses as saying the gunmen possibly had links with the Party of Free Life of Kurdistan (PJAK), a Kurdish rebel group operating in border areas near Iraq and Turkey.
Iranian forces often clash with guerrillas from PJAK, an offshoot of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) which took up arms in 1984 to fight for a Kurdish homeland in southeast Turkey.

Police here foiled an apparent bombing attempt, finding an improvised explosive device (IED), before it went off. It was the third home-made bomb discovered by the police in just 24 hours in this city on Friday. No group or individual has claimed responsibility for the failed bombing. The IED was found near an electric cooperative, which was previously targeted by the al-Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf group, officials said. “It was an IED alright, but we still do not know what it was made from,” said Supt. Jose Bayani Gucela, a police explosives expert.
The home-made bomb was left at a convenience store near the Zamboanga City Electric Cooperative Inc., in the village of Putik. This plan is designed to improve relations with Middle Eastern states such as Israel and promote peace. The map I have linked below looks eerily like the map for the Roman Empire.
