So much drama, and it’s making our gas more expensive!! Although there are definitely bigger issues than that hanging in the balance here. NYT:
PARIS — Iran’s Revolutionary Guards test-fired nine missiles in war-game maneuvers on Wednesday, including at least one the government in Tehran described as having the range to reach Israel.
The tests drew sharp American criticism and came a day after the Iranians threatened to retaliate against Israel and the United States if attacked…
…The tests, shown on Iranian television, coincided with increasingly tense exchanges with the West over Tehran’s nuclear program, which Iran said is for civilian purposes but which many Western governments suspect is aimed at building nuclear weapons. On Tuesday, the United States and the Czech Republic signed an accord to allow the Pentagon to deploy part of its contentious antiballistic missile shield, which Washington maintains is intended to protect in part against Iranian missiles.

Another David and Goliath story from the West Bank
by shergald, Wed Jul 09, 2008 at 02:33:44 PM EST

As reported by Mel Frykberg in The Electronic Intifada, 8 July 2008, the story of a Palestinian village that took on the Israeli military using, of course, nonviolent protest. Many Americans have never heard about such protests, because it is the most dangerous kind of news about a people who have been depicted, through a concerted propaganda effort, as “terrorists.” Of course, from the perspective of the military occupier, every act of defiance is an act of terrorism according to more modern and inaccurate definitions of the term terrorism and who is using it. State terrorism is excluded, naturally.
The US State Department today is probably the greatest outlet for anti-Palestinian propaganda outside of Israel, and if the Ni’lin standoff were to reach the mainstream media here in the USA, it would undoubtedly […]

Israel Cracks Down on Hamas in the West Bank

Here’s a quick excerpt
In the past week, Israeli troops have raided municipal buildings and shut down schools charities and health clinics on the West Bank that Israel says have ties to Hamas. Tuesday, Israeli troops shut down the largest shopping center in Nablus, saying any businesses that did not vacate the building would have their assets seized.
Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev says the crackdown is aimed at stopping Hamas from expanding its operations beyond the Gaza Strip, which Hamas seized last year in a violent takeover - ousting forces loyal to moderate Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
“We are trying to contain the Hamas infrastructure on the West Bank,” Regev said. “Hamas does not seek to control just Gaza. They want to expand their reach and what we are trying to do is limit that. They have all sorts of societies where they use control over civilian facilities to strengthen their terrorist control.”

The Russian Spies Among Us

Here’s a quick excerpt
Britain’s MI5 is now saying the murder of former Russian agent Alexander Litvinenko had the backing of the Russian state.
Litvinenko, who was a fierce critic of former Russian President Vladimir Putin, was poisoned in London in 2006.
MI5 suspects former KGB agent Andrei Lugovoi of the murder, but he has denied any involvement. In May 2007, Crown Prosecutors formally submitted an extradition request to Moscow for Lugovoi to be extradited to Britain. Russia has refused to cooperate, saying it would be against its constitution to do so.
The BBC is reporting the Russian internal security organization, FSB, is responsible for Litvinenko’s murder. FSB is operating under Putin with an extraordinary amount of autonomy when compared to other foreign espionage operations.

TEHRAN (AFP) — Iran would “set fire” to Israel and the US navy in the Gulf as its first response to any American attack over its nuclear programme, an aide to supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned on Tuesday.
“The first US shot on Iran would set the United States’ vital interests in the world on fire,” said Ali Shirazi, a mid-ranking cleric who is Khamenei’s representative to the naval forces of the elite Revolutionary Guards.
“Tel Aviv and the US fleet in the Persian Gulf would be the targets that would be set on fire in Iran’s crushing response,” he said, according to the Fars news agency.
The United States and its top regional ally Israel have never ruled out attacking Iran over its nuclear drive, which the West fears could be aimed at making nuclear weapons.

The 13-page manual’s apparent author, Abu Abdullah al-Qureishi, says: “This work of mine is a gift that I am offering to the Islamic nation, especially to Sheikh Bin Laden.”
For the sake of clarity, al-Qureishi says he has divided the ‘manual’ into two parts - electronic and technical aspects.
The manual contains several diagrams and teaches users how to used a remote-controlled device to send a signal to a receiver planted inside the car to be blown up.
