SAARC on the one hand government politicians are of the opinion that it would boost the image of our country and it is worth the money spent. Sri Lanka and its President would become the regional head of a very large population in this part of the world. They say, we should take pride in this and all who oppose it are not patriots, and are connected to the Tigers.
On the other hand, some feel it is a tremendous loss of money at a time when the cost of food, traveling etc., is unbearable to the majority of our citizens. Salary increases are not possible due to the high cost. The Treasury has said that it does not have the money to grant the salary increases requested by the workers.

Sixteen American service members have died of accidental electrocutions in Iraq, the Defense Department said yesterday, more than the military had previously disclosed. Most of the 11 soldiers and five Marines died during their work, including making accidental contact with power lines or accidents while performing maintenance on electrical systems, the Pentagon said. But two died in their living facilities, including at least one soldier who was electrocuted while he took a shower. The disclosure was made after William Utt, KBR Inc. chief executive, met with Senator Bob Casey, Democrat of Pennsylvania, on Capitol Hill to discuss allegations that soldiers died of electrocutions caused by faulty wiring at US facilities run by the contractor.

Soldiers from NATO’s International Security Assistance Force fired on a vehicle after it failed to stop at a checkpoint in southern Afghanistan, killing four civilians, according to an ISAF statement.
The incident took place Saturday in the Sangin district of Helmand province, the statement said.
After directing the vehicle to stop, the soldiers fired warning shots, “but were eventually forced to fire at it when it refused to stop, fearing an insurgent attack,” the ISAF statement said.
Three wounded civilians were treated for their injuries. Two other people in the vehicle were not hurt.
