Here’s a quick excerpt
Southern California was rocked today by a 5.4 magnitude earthquake late Tuesday morning, swaying buildings in downtown Los Angeles for several seconds. The earthquake hit at 11:42 a.m. PT and was felt from Los Angeles to San Diego and slightly in Las Vegas. The quake was centered about 45 km southeast of downtown Los Angeles near Chino Hills. Preliminary information from the United States Geological Survey estimated the quake at magnitude 5.8 but the magnitude decreased to a 5.4. This is the largest earthquake to hit a populated area of Southern California since 1999, which was a 7.1 magnitude. A 5.4 magnitude is considered “moderate”, which can cause slight damage to buildings and other structures.
No immediate reports of damage was given and so far there have been no flight delays or cancellations at Los Angeles International Airport. San Bernardino County fire dispatch also had no immediate reports of damage. There […]

CNN-IBN must not hide truth from us
Pioneer Daily

Sting operations in India have a controversial record. But most controversies hitherto have arisen only in the aftermath of these being aired on television.
At present, however, we face a queer situation wherein a major television news channel is refusing to telecast a sting operation it conducted in collusion with the protagonists.
According to three BJP MPs, who were seen on television screens across the country waving wads of currency notes inside the Lok Sabha on July 22, CNN-IBN recorded a series of episodes in which they were offered a hefty bribe to abstain from voting in the confidence motion moved by the Prime Minister.
It is abundantly clear that the channel enthusiastically undertook the operation over two days with the help of hidden cameras and microphones. CNN-IBN has not denied that its correspondent secretly filmed the entire sequence of events in which an offer of […]

This is the only time I’ll ever admit to this, but Nancy was right. Nancy Reagan that is.

(Just Say No to crack and Reaganomics)
Drugs like meth, crack and heroin are thankfully still a mystery to me. I’ll never forget my first round through the D.A.R.E (back then it the acronym stood for Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program when Officer Kavaloski gave me the information that kept me off the pipe, kept the powders out of my nose and kept me far from the pills and needles. He provided me with two of those stories that you hear and can never again shake from your thoughts. Officer Kavaloski stood tall and serious as he told my D.A.R.E class - Drugs make you crazy. I was called to a house of a woman who was high on PCP and you know what she did? (He paused for emphasis) She ate off the tips of each one […]

Is Gaza under occupation or not? Free Gaza boats about to find out more
Anis Hamadeh, July 28, 2008
For more than two years, all border crossings to the Gaza Strip have been closed by the Israeli army. Since then, the 1.5 million inhabitants live in a state of siege, even more so since June, when the siege was tightened. As reasons for the siege Israel refers to Qassam rocket fire from the area and the alleged intention of the Hamas government to destroy Israel. At the same time, Israeli government officials emphasize that the occupation of the Gaza Strip has ended with the withdrawal of the Israeli settlements and army in September 2005 and that the Gaza Strip would now be considered foreign territory. But facts on the ground speak a different language.

The siege has a disastrous effect on the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip as it violates the human, […]

Obama to meet with prime minister of Pakistan

Here’s a quick excerpt
Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama planned to meet Tuesday with the prime minister of Pakistan, one of a series of private sessions for discussions ranging from international to economic concerns.
Obama was to confer with Pakistan’s new leader, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, according to Obama’s campaign. President George W. Bush met with Gilani on Monday at the White House and praised Gilani as a reliable partner in confronting extremism.
U.S.-Pakistan relations have been strained by the war in Afghanistan and questions about the whereabouts of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden, who some believe may be hiding along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. The U.S. has been pressuring Pakistan to take action against strongholds of Taliban and al-Qaida fighters believed to be in that nation’s frontier.

Digger advisers to help Pakistan

pbtt wrote an interesting post today on
Here’s a quick excerpt
AUSTRALIA is prepared to send military advisers to Pakistan to help its army in training for counter-insurgency warfare and stabilising the border with Afghanistan.
Defence Minister Joel Fitzgibbon will today call for a more concerted international effort to combat Taliban insurgents based in Pakistan’s tribal areas, including economic aid and providing its army with the skills to conduct counter-insurgency campaigns as well as civil operations.
US President George W. Bush said yesterday he had received a “strong commitment” from Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani that Pakistan would try “as best as possible” to prevent militants from crossing into Afghanistan, where they attack US and NATO troops. Mr Gilani in turn called on Washington not to act unilaterally in Pakistan, following a suspected US missile strike on al-Qa’ida’s top expert on chemical and biological weapons, Abu Khabab al-Masri, on Monday.
