Hurricane Katrina: After the Levees Broke

By Sunday afternoon, a historic evacuation of Louisiana’s Gulf Coast, the largest evacuation in state history, had been completed with 2 million people having joined together in an exodus that left New Orleans standing in near silence as a ghost town. Policemen and National Guardsmen were carrying guns while they stood watching over the city’s empty streets, as the nation anticipated a storm that could turn out to rival Hurricane Katrina in its destructive power.

The storm was set to crash ashore on midday Monday with frightful force. Weather forecasters are presently saying that Gustav is very likely to grow stronger as it marches toward the Gulf Coast with top sustained winds of around 115 mph. At 5 p.m. Sunday (EDT), the National Hurricane Center said Gustav was a Category 3 storm that was centered about 215 miles southeast of the […]

Who Is Sarah Palin?

The question Barbadians and others have been asking since the announcement is - who the hell is Sarah Palin? To be honest the BU household has read her name in our VECO readings. She has developed quite a reputation as the new Alaskan Governor who is a fierce anti-corruption advocate, several political stalwarts, Ted Stevens et al having being indicted under her tenure.
The Barbados economy like many around the world is interwoven with that of the USA. Most Caribbean people have families who reside in the USA. It seems natural that we should have a healthy interest in the political shenanigans currently going on in the USA.
We know that Sarah Palin is a pro-lifer. To prove the point she delivered a child while having prior knowledge that the child would be born with Down Syndrome. She is anti-corruption in government and […]

Hurricane Preparation Is Substantial In The Wake of Gustav

Here’s a quick excerpt
All along the Gulf coast, from the Florida/Alabama state line to Galvaston, Texas, everyone is gearing up evacuating and monitoring the process of making sure the entire process is going smoothly. Nothing is being left to chance. This is in stark contrast compared what happened with Hurricane Katrina three years ago.
The Army Corps of Engineers says that the levees are safe to handle a category three hurricane in New Orleans. Governor Bobby Jindal, told Louisiana residents to be careful in monitoring the storm’s progress. Jindal warned that the storm surge could be as high as 12 feet of water. Depending on the direction of the storm east or west, many in the densely populated areas will need to act quickly to get to a safe place.
This storm could spend a lot of time in Louisiana; including storm conditions that could linger for days. So […]

British amateur diplomat tried to make a peace deal with Germany in World War II, National Archive files reveal.
Old Etonian James Lonsdale-Bryans travelled to Italy to meet German diplomat Ulrich von Hassell.
He proposed to him that Germany could have a “free hand” in Europe while Britain ran the rest of the world.
MI5 files released under the Freedom of Information Act show that security service officials knew of the Rome trip but did not try to stop it.
Mr Lonsdale-Bryans wrote to the then Foreign Secretary Lord Halifax with his plans.
The files reveal MI5 was unsure as to how much backing Mr Lonsdale-Bryans had from Lord Halifax.

MI5’s D-Day pigeon plot revealed

Here’s a quick excerpt
British spy chiefs drew up secret plans to use pigeons to spread false rumours about the impending D-Day landings.
The plot in 1943 to drop the birds into German-occupied France is revealed in newly declassified MI5 files released by the National Archives.
Germany had been intercepting pigeons carrying Allied notes, the files say, so MI5 moved to drop false information.
It planned to put extra pigeons over the west coast of France to give the impression the invasion would be there.
The revelations come in newly-released files on World War II called “Channels for deception”.

MI5 cleared granny nuclear traitor

Here’s a quick excerpt
Melita Norwood, the great-grandmother from London exposed as a KGB spy in 1999, was suspected of being a traitor years before she started handing Britain’s nuclear secrets to Moscow.
According to a new book about Norwood, who died in 2005 at the age of 93, MI5 cleared her to work on the bomb programme despite knowing she was close to a notorious communist spy.
David Burke, author of The Spy Who Came in From the Coop, published by Boydell & Brewer in October, says the findings suggest either that MI5 was incompetent or that a Soviet mole in the security service allowed her to pass the vetting process.
“The British authorities should not have allowed her onto the project when she had an MI5 file, and you have to wonder whether somebody did it to keep a conduit open to the Russians, because they were our wartime allies,” said Burke. […]

Chinese police shot dead six people suspected of involvement in a wave of violence in the far western region of Xinjiang as an exile group claimed they were killed after surrendering.
Police launched an operation to arrest nine people late Friday after a series of attacks in August killed 33 people and threatened to overshadow the Olympic Games.
Xinjiang - an isolated region that borders Afghanistan, Pakistan and six Central Asian nations - is home to China’s ethnic minority Uighurs, who say they are repressed by the Chinese government. China has long said that insurgents are leading an Islamic separatist movement in Xinjiang.
