The 2008 Olympics is about to begin in a couple of days in Beijing. Like many in the world, I love this great athletic event showcasing one of the best cooperative enterprises of mankind. It always inspires me.
This year’s event has caused me to pause and think about a couple of things. When the Olympic torch was passing through San Francisco there was associated with it, as with other places that the torch was routed through, protests with the Free Tibet movement.
Tibet has been vying for years to become independent from China. Most of it is centered on what is considered China’s unlawful occupation of Tibet by force by the People’s Liberation Army. The enforcement of their rule has resulted in several human rights violations from torture, rapes and other atrocities. Refugees have also reported abuses at borders.
Although focus has been brought to the Tibetan cause by such luminaries as […]

The contemporary art scene in China is dominated by men. In the last 20 years, Chinese art has become a booming business that’s given birth to an elite group who’ve managed to make millions and establish themselves as celebrities within the industry. There are no women in this exclusive class.
As children of the Cultural Revolution in China during the last 50 years, female artists have emerged with the talent and confidence to articulate their perspective. While male constituents have flourished, female artists have difficulty finding an outlet to display their work. Museums refuse to hold female solo shows and out of the hundreds of galleries in the major cities like Beijing, women rarely get a platform. Most successful female artists in China are married to successful male artists. I can’t help but wonder then is the recognition based on her work or on the union and collaboration with an alpha […]

So now, Paris Hilton’s ripping on John McCain for having the nerve to put her in his Obama attack ad. Late last Sunday Paris’s mother Kathy slammed McCain for the waste of money, time and attention given to the ad in a blog for The Huffington Post. But Paris has made a big step further, and taking her response to McCain and his ad to the camera in a scripted piece, saying she’ll “see you at the debate, bitches.”

Iran has either suspended or abolished the penalty of death by stoning. This brutal and gruesome, not to mention excruciatingly painful, method of execution involves burying the accused up to his neck and then pelting him with stones that are big enough to cause hurt and pain but yet not kill instantaneously. One can surmise that it would take a fairly large crowd and fairly large supply of stones before the execution can be deemed to have been successfully carried out. This decision is interesting because one of the offences to carry this penalty is adultery and most of those sentenced to be stoned are women from the lower socio-economic stratum and thus more likely not to have an effective defence mounted on their behalf.
No reason was given for this humane decision and one that would raise the standing of Iran, not by much but perhaps by a whisker, with […]

Al Jazeera:
The Bush administration has denied claims made in a new book that it ordered the CIA to fabricate a letter showing links between Saddam Hussein, the former Iraqi leader, and the September 11 attacks.
The Way of the World, by Ron Suskind, says the White House gave George Tenet, the former CIA director, a letter saying Iraq had hosted M#mce_temp_url#ohammed Atta, the lead hijacker of planes in the attacks.
The letter was to be rewritten as if it had been written by Tarir Jallil Habbush, a former Iraqi intelligence chief in CIA protective custody after the 2003 US invasion, to Saddam Hussein.
“The notion that the White House directed anyone to forge a letter from Habbush to Saddam Hussein is absurd,” said Tony Fratto, the White House deputy press secretary.
Suskind wrote: “The idea was to take the letter to Habbush and have him transcribe it in his own neat handwriting on a piece […]

SASKATOON - Preliminary testing suggests the mysterious white substance found in a box of supplies sent to a gold mine in northern Saskatchewan is “not an infectious agent such as anthrax,” say RCMP.
The white powder and an “irrational” letter were contained in a box of screws sent to the Seabee gold mine Monday, said Neil McMillan, president and CEO of Claude Resources Inc., the Saskatoon company which owns the mine 500 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon.
When a worker on the second floor of the Seabee administration building opened the box and discovered the letter and powder, the area was immediately secured and the RCMP were called in, McMillan said.

Malda, Aug. 3: Police recovered a suspected improvised explosive device fitted with a timer from the bank of the Ganga in Malda’s Biharitola village on the Bengal-Jharkhand border this morning.
However, the nearest bomb squad of the CID is based in Siliguri and the experts are not expected to reach Malda till tomorrow. The police have placed the device in a bucket of water, but has not been able to defuse it.
“We cannot say if it is an explosive and how powerful it may be till the bomb squad arrives,” Malda police chief Satyajit Bandyopadhyay said.
Sources said residents of Biharitola, 35km from Malda town, spotted the spherical object wired to a small clock on the edge of the village close to the riverbank around 6am. They reported the matter to the Baishnabnagar police.

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) — A Jordanian military court has sentenced 12 men to up to five years in jail for planning to join Iraq’s insurgency and carry out attacks against U.S. and Iraqi forces.

A Chinese immigrant accused of stabbing, beheading and cannibalizing a man on a Greyhound bus in Canada pleaded in court Tuesday for someone to “please kill me,” and was ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.
Vince Weiguang Li, who immigrated to Canada from China in 2004, is charged with second-degree murder in last Wednesday’s slaying of 22-year-old carnival worker Tim McLean — an attack which witnesses aboard the bus said appeared to be unprovoked. He has yet to enter a plea.
Li was scheduled to appear Tuesday to determine whether he should undergo psychiatric testing, but the judge in Portage La Prairie adjourned the hearing for a short recess to allow a legal aid attorney to confer with him. Since his arrest, Li has declined to speak to prosecutors and his court-appointed attorney.
When asked again by the judge after the recess if he wanted a lawyer, Li shook his head and […]
