Why is Russia invading the little country of Georgia right now?
You may have read a number of reasons, and they all play into this game: Georgia’s alliance with and reliance on the U.S., a promise by the Georgian president to retake South Ossetia, Russia’s claimed desire to help those of Russian descent in the area, Russia’s desire to take control of a pipeline bringing oil to Turkey and the West…it goes on and on.
This article, though, puts the whole game into much sharper focus. It’s from Stratfor Intelligence, and it was sent to me by one of my usual correspondents.
While both the U.S. and the E.U. have issued the expected protests, both must be feeling very frustrated right now. The U.S. has no ability to counter Russia’s moves; its forces are stretched as it is. The E.U. still has no military might […]

** Anti-Semitism/Brahminism

The Parallel between anti-Brahminism and anti-Semitism
Jacob De Roover
Social science debate in India has been hijacked by the struggle between secularism and Hindutva for decades now. Usually the Sangh Parivar is blamed for this turn of events. However, it could well be argued that the Hindutva ideologues simply adopted the stance of the secularists. Perhaps the best illustration is the case of anti-Brahminism.
To be against “Brahminism” is part and parcel of the political correctness of progressive scholars in twenty-first-century India, much like being against Muslims is part of the message of their Hindutva colleagues.
This indicates that something is very wrong with the Indian academic debate. Promotion of animosity towards a religious tradition or its followers is not acceptable today, but it becomes truly perverse when the intelligentsia endorses it.
In Europe, it took horrendous events to put an end to the propaganda of anti-Semitism, which had penetrated the media and intelligentsia. It […]

Minister Sinckler Admits “We are being tricked….”

NON-TARIFF BARRIERS (NTBs) imposed by some developed countries are a concern for Caribbean governments and, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and International Business Christopher Sinckler warns, they can derail regional efforts to export. Sinckler said agriculture, the region’s “most protected sector” would be the hardest hit by NTBs which he claimed had “reduced the benefits of trade liberalisation”.
The minister told members of the Caribbean Farmers’ Network meeting at Savannah Hotel, “Developed countries such as the United States and the European Union often boast of having very low tariffs relative to developing countries. What they are silent on is the level of non-tariff barriers relative to developing countries.
“Standards generally differ as to the level or incidence of non-tariff barriers. They all, however, seem to point to the fact that NTBs are more prevalent in developed than in developing countries,” he noted.
Sinckler said that while Caribbean governments […]

More faking unearthed by Chinese during Olympic opening ceremony: First fireworks, now child singing.

Anyone who watched Friday’s spectacular Olympic opening ceremony from Beijing would probably agree what they saw was “unreal.” Turns out they would be right. First it was revealed that the Chinese officials–with the blessing of the Olympic Committee–faked part of the amazing fireworks that occurred during the ceremony. Now it has been revealed that the fakery didn’t stop there.
As reported on Breitbart.com and Telegraph.co.UK, the show’s musical director has admitted that the darling little Chinese girl who “sang” during the Olympic opening ceremony was not actually singing but actually miming. Chinese officials decided to place the girl front and center because the real singer was not considered attractive enough due to her buck teeth.
Pigtailed and precious little Lin Miaoke was apparently selected to appear because of her “cute” appearance. In reality she did not sing a single note.
Photographs of Lin, wearing a bright red “party dress” were published in numerous […]

 Maka jika […]

Joe Lieberman: McCain Regrets the Hagee Situation
Excerpts of David Brody’s interview with Senator Joseph Lieberman that appeared on CBN News on July 29, 2008
In a one on one interview with CBN News’ David Brody, Senator Joseph Lieberman defends Pastor John Hagee.
“I’ve talked to Pastor Hagee about it. He’s a dear friend. I have the greatest admiration for him and I think that he feels the lesson he learned was that he shouldn’t have gotten involved in politics. I think Senator McCain has respect for Pastor Hagee and kind of regrets the way it all developed.”
“I don’t agree with everything that John Hagee has ever said or done. I can safely say that Pastor Hagee doesn’t agree with everything I’ve said or done. But we agree on some big things. We agree on our basic religious beliefs. We believe in the God of the Bible. We believe […]

Little Chinese girl dissed at Olympics for not being cute enough

Sorry for my absence on this blog. Please tell me everyone has caught this story (this one from MSNBC, but there are a ton of them), where Beijing Olympics officials pulled the 7-year-old singer of the National Anthem at the Opening Ceremony because she was not cute enough.
A 7-year-old Chinese girl was not good-looking enough for the Olympics opening ceremony, so another little girl with a pixie smile lip-synched “Ode to the Motherland,” an official said.
In the latest example of the lengths Beijing took for a perfect start to the Summer Games, a member of China’s Politburo asked for the last-minute change to match one girl’s face with another’s voice, the ceremony’s chief music director said in an interview with Beijing Radio.
“The audience will understand that it’s in the national interest,” Chen Qigang said in a video of the interview posted online Sunday night.

And more:

Lin Miaoke’s performance Friday night, like […]

So, let me see if I understand this correctly; its ok for a moron, douche bag to run this country but its not ok for a Black man to run this country?
President George W. Bush held-up the American flag the wrong way during the first day of the swimming finals at the National Aquatics Center during the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games on August 10th in Beijing.
Some say that this is an honest mistake but, I expect better from the President.

Russia ‘backs Georgia peace plan’

Here’s a quick excerpt
Russia has approved a plan intended to end fighting with Georgia, brokered by French President Nicolas Sarkozy.
Mr Sarkozy, whose country holds the EU presidency, is now in Tbilisi trying to persuade Georgians to accept the deal.
Under the plan, both sides would agree not to use force, and all troops would return to the positions they were in before the conflict began last week.
Earlier, Russia announced its military activity in the area was completed and witnesses reported troops pulling back.

Military upheavel is benign, bordering on boring

Adam “Mauritania” Fiebs is doing just fine in Africa.  The coup going on there is, in so many words, “boring”.  Meanwhile, it’s been generally agreed that Mauritania Peace Corp work is the least-desierable of all assignments.  Yay Adam!
…as you can see, as predicted, the coup is boring and goes with the saying “maritania…worst…coup…ever.” oh well. … i guess peace corps took an unofficial poll and has concluded mauritania is the least desirable, if not hardest, service in peace corps. hilarious! hope all is well

Hello PCV/Ts:
I just wanted to drop you a quick note to say hello and provide you with a brief update on the political situation in the country.  Not that I am counting, but this is now my third coup d’etat since arriving […]
