US blamed over S Ossetia crisis

So you’ve probably heard about Russia’s invasion of Georgia, which was in response to Georgia’s attempt to militarily assert itself over S. Ossetia…if you haven’t heard about it, read some news!! Anyways my buddy Al has a good piece speculating on the U.S. role…Al is so damn patriotic, that’s why I love him.
The US has had stern words for Russia over its military intervention in Georgia to back South Ossietian separatists, but many analysts say that the Bush administration must share the blame for the crisis.

Washington has formed a close bond with the government of Mikheil Saakashvili since he came to power in the 2003 ‘Rose Revolution,’ offering military and economic aid and encouraging Georgia to join Nato.

Jon Sawyer, the director for the Pulitzer Centre for Crisis Reporting, said US politicians had encouraged their Georgian counterparts to think they had the backing of the US when Tbilisi decided to launch […]

Here’s a quick excerpt
Nicola , a 27 year old Retail Manager, was pregnant with her first child. Since she was young she had always wanted children , but had put it off because Nicola was a natural worrier and she feared that childbirth would be a painful experience. She believed that the intense fellings of dicsomfort would detract away from the enjoyment of giving birth. Furthermore, after listening to her friends who already had children and to their horror stories of long labours and unexpected cesarians she had the idea that childbirth was something to dread. After looking up alternatives drugs for labour, she came across hypnosis for childbirth on the internet and it seemed a lot more friendly, powerful and effective than deep breathing. What was even more reassuring for Nicola was that hypnosis allowed her to control the process in her own time using the process of self-hypnosis which she learnt […]

US “Advisors” Already In Georgia, Ossetia?

David Power wrote an interesting post today on
Here’s a quick excerpt
Apparently so, if this Russian paper can be believed:
Thousands of mercenaries are fighting for Georgia in this burning conflict with South Ossetia. They are commanded by the U.S. military instructors, RIA Novosti reported with reference to a high-ranked officer of Russia’s military intelligence.
[…]
The U.S. military instructors directly command and coordinate actions of mercenaries without being involved in actual fighting, the source specified. According to intelligence data, there are roughly 1,000 military instructors of the United States in Georgia.
Task force of Russia has annihilated a few groups of mercenaries. Some of mercenaries have been captured, and investigators are working with them, the source said.

Hmmm. This is beginning to look like a combination of World War One and Vietnam, right down to the dodgy reporting:
American broadcaster CNN has been accused of using the wrong pictures in their coverage of the conflict in South Ossetia. A Russian cameraman says footage of wrecked […]

Smiling Baby Lights up Wiring in Mother’s Brain…

Phoenix Woman wrote an interesting post today on
Here’s a quick excerpt
Recent brain scans from researchers at the Baylor College of Medicine in Texas have revealed that a baby’s smile not only lights up a mother’s heart but also her brain. The scientists observed brain scans of first time mother as they looked at various pictures of babies, this included the mothers’ own babies and the babies of others whose expressions were either smiling or crying. What the researched have unveiled is that when the mothers were shown the pictures of the babies smiling a unique reaction occured in their brain as opposed to other images they were shown. The scans revealed that it was the reward centres of the brain that lit up which further reinforces the idea that women are programmed to care biologically

“The smile just by itself - just by seeing it - is a powerful social reward,” outlined Dr. Ross Thompson, a professor of psychology at the […]

Still Georgia x Russia

Here’s a quick excerpt
Closer View has been covering the Georgia-Russia conflict and has made some interesting points. I do, however, disagree with this:
“It is only in U.S. and E.U. interests to have Georgia fight the Russians in an open conflict. Contrary to what the naive Yuschenko may be saying, having Ukraine part of NATO is still best for the West only. “

From the western point of view, Georgia breaking up this fight was a silly mistake, a case of jumping the gun. Even though it seems clear that pretty much any opposition to Russia in the Caucasus, slowing down the enormous Russian influence, is beneficial to western interests, an open conflict would only be interesting if stalemate was guaranteed. Having Georgia invaded, or its pro-West government overthrown, are not welcome options.
Instead, Georgia gave to Russia all the reasons for the same old excuse of “protecting its citizens“. Russian response was overwhelming as expected, taking advantage […]

Never Prod A Sleeping Bear

Georgia made a mistake, some might say encouraged by the West to prod a sleeping giant…Russia. Sweet words and the prospect of joining NATO encouraged President Mikheil Saakashvili to invade South Ossetia. If he felt that NATO would come to his aid when Russia engaged them with maximum force, he was sadly mistaken. There is a world of difference between giving tactit support in an internal dispute over territory, and committing troops in combat against Russia.
In the recent past Russia has had its problems, but buoyed up with its gas and oil reserves, particularly with the West’s thirst for them. Russia is again a force to be reckoned with. Georgia gave Russia the opportunity to demonstrate its power…and demonstrate it they […]

CRIMES AND CORRUPTIONS OF THE NEW WORLD ORDER NEWS wrote an interesting post today on
Here’s a quick excerpt
A new study from the Center for Immigration Studies concludes that immigration from poor countries to USA has contributed to CO2 emissions and should be a factor in future environmental policy. On average, immigrants produce less CO2 then native-born Americans, but that is still more than they would if they lived in their original countries.
“The estimated CO2 emissions of the average immigrant in the United States are 18% less than those of the average native-born American. However, immigrants in the United States produce an estimated four times more CO2 in the United States as they would have in their countries of origin.”

What makes the difference is sheer arithmetics: the numbers are huge. The so called “immigrants emissions” are roughly equal to the emissions of Great Britain and Sweden together; that would be ranked in seventh in world CO2 emissions, behind China, the United States, Russia, Japan, India, and Germany.
Meanwhile, a […]

NEWS ABOUT HOME

Here’s a quick excerpt
When you are an immigrant, or indeed simply travelling or working out of your home country, news about home acquires a special significance. And when there is constant talk of war on your country as one of the “options” available to America and Israel, then you get to be on a state of high alert all the time. And since the leaders of your home country, both elected and unelected, love to appear in foreign news to a degree which makes Paris Hilton appear media-shy in contrast, well, you get to see the name of your home country plastered in headlines much more than is comfortable. You start wishing that the afore-mentioned leaders would indulge in a little extra-marital affair, or start cross-dressing or brothel-visiting to obtain the media attention they are craving, instead of making dangerous and ludicrous declarations which everybody else in the world seems to take so seriously.
Ordinarily, to […]

Pound of cyanide found in room where man died

Here’s a quick excerpt
DENVER (AP) — Authorities in Denver say they have found about a pound of highly toxic sodium cyanide in a hotel room where a man’s body was discovered.
Police say foul play is not suspected and FBI spokeswoman Kathy Wright said Wednesday there was no apparent connection to terrorism.
The man’s body was found Monday at the Burnsley Hotel about four blocks from the Colorado state Capitol, and investigators say he had been dead for several days.
Police on Wednesday identified a white powder found in the room as sodium cyanide, which can be used as a pesticide or to extract gold from ore.
