Russia’s Concept for Dominating Europe
by J. R. Nyquist
Weekly Column Published: 08.15.2008

The Kremlin strategists believe that the United States is on the brink of a crippling dislocation. According to a July 29 Pravda article, an anonymous Russian diplomat revealed that the “Russian administration believes the United States may soon suffer from a serious political crisis.” The sequence begins with a financial crash, advances to political unrest and finally to the dissolution of American military power. As the Russian diplomat warned, “America is standing on the verge of a large-scale crisis of its own existence.”  click here for full article: Global Analysis-J.R.Nyquist

13 Saudi Students Pave Way for Women’s Rights

Tufts alliance opens door to diplomacy career
A unique partnership launched this year between The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University and Dar Al-Hekma College, the first private college for women in Saudi Arabia. This August, 13 Saudi women completed a crash course in international diplomacy, blazing a brazen path for the future of their country, where women still can’t drive or vote - nor, in many cases, travel, work, or see a doctor without permission from a male guardian.
The six-month program - split between Dar Al-Hekma in Jeddah and the Fletcher School - is the first known journey by an American university into training Saudi women to become diplomats. The new opportunity for women to represent their country could spur further gains in women’s rights in Saudi Arabia, a key US ally, and allow the kingdom to become more competitive in a global society, officials at both schools […]

Usain Bolt not from Jamaica. He is from Planet Quickness.

Here’s a quick excerpt
Sometimes a person can accomplish something so far beyond the reach of mere mortals that it must be deemed either ridiculous or otherworldly. Since running 200 meters in 19.30 seconds isn’t what I would call ridiculous, then by default what Usain Bolt did today in the Olympic finals was otherworldly. Meaning not normal. Freakish even.
I say this because I figure it is my duty to make normal folks such as myself feel better after having watched that race and been reduced to a whining puddle of inadequacy and self-doubt. I remember the days when I used to run the 100 yard dash and the 200 (yes, that long ago), and was even being eyed by a few top track coaches.
Yes! Me!
I reflect upon these long ago and far away chest-thumping moments of pride because, once again, they make me feel better. Because when I place my accomplishments in the context […]

Let’s RETARD the RETARDED talk…

Here’s a quick excerpt
I’m sure you have all heard about the controversy over Ben Stiller’s new movie - Tropic Thunder, which I have yet to even see. Advocates for the mentally disabled(I’m not sure if my reference here is PC or not, but I’ll risk it), have requested we boycott the movie because of its gratuitous use of the word retard or retarded.
Sometimes it amazes me how people can manipulate a mere word and turn it into hateful language that if uttered, could destroy a person’s soul. I’m pretty sure that the origin of the word “retard” was never intended to be used as a derogatory term in order to describe mentally disabled individuals. It was also not expected to become a slang term for something that is ridiculous, stupid, or unnecessary, but unfortunately, it has. I sometimes enjoy throwing out “retarded” here and there, but I never use this to be hateful or perpetuate discrimination toward disabled individuals.
It’s more like…Wow, Shirley Phelps  sure is retarded.

(I regularly […]

Secret Service’s job: secure political conventions

cubejungle wrote an interesting post today on
Here’s a quick excerpt
WASHINGTON (AP) — Every day the Secret Service thinks: Today could be THE day.
That’s the sober mind-set going into the presidential conventions — both of which present special security challenges for this legendary agency in the throes of the longest political campaign in history.
These will be the second set of conventions since the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. But, perhaps surprisingly to outsiders, al-Qaida is not the leading concern.
Not that the terrorism potential is being overlooked. But the Secret Service and FBI are giving special attention to the possibility of action by other extremists — radicals from the left or right, anarchists, lone wolf crazies — who might be attracted to the conventions because of the significance and high visibility.
This year, the significance of Obama’s race is not lost on anyone either.
The Secret Service and FBI said they did not have any specific threats with racist overtones. And there has […]

MADRID, Spain (AP) - Officials say 149 people were killed today
when a Spanish airliner crashed on takeoff from Madrid’s airport.
An emergency official says there were only 26 survivors in the
mid-afternoon crash.
The Spanair flight was bound for the popular Canary Islands off

crashed, burned and broke into pieces. It’s not yet known why.
A Spanair spokesman says the plane, which was a codeshare to Las
Palmas with a Lufthansa flight, was carrying 175 people.
A major Spanish newspaper (El Pais) reports that the jet’s
takeoff had been an hour late due to technical problems. It says
the U.S.-made MD-82 eventually managed to get slightly off the
ground but crashed near the end of the runway.

Attacks rise as Taliban close in on Kabul

newsdirector wrote an interesting post today on
Here’s a quick excerpt
THE Taliban ambush that killed 10 French soldiers is the latest in a series of deadly attacks near Kabul that show the rebels are gaining on the Afghan capital, say analysts.
The Taliban have mounted their most serious attacks in six years of fighting in Afghanistan this week, including a co-ordinated assault by at least 10 suicide bombers against one of the largest American military bases in the country, launched just before midnight on Monday.
That attack, on Camp Salerno in the eastern province of Khost, wounded three American soldiers and six members of the Afghan Special Forces.

Brown plays down Taliban resurgence

pbtt wrote an interesting post today on
Here’s a quick excerpt
LONDON (AFP) — Prime Minister Gordon Brown played down Wednesday the threat of a resurgent Taliban in Afghanistan, saying the recent wave of violence that killed 10 French soldiers had always been expected.
He also stressed the importance of close ties between Afghanistan and neighbouring Pakistan, which he said was facing a “period of political uncertainty” after the resignation of President Pervez Musharraf.
“We’ll be pressing on the Pakistanis themselves to be involved with us in fighting terrorism and making sure the number of terrorists coming into Afghanistan from Pakistan is limited,” he said.
